26th February 2007

Week Beginning 26th February 2007

This week, we have a lot of information about our current topic of What's in the News. We are encouraging you read as much non-fiction as you can find - newspapers, magazines, flyers, leaflets etc. Also, you are allowed to watch TV for your homework!! (Just the news reports before you get too excited!!)

Here are some super sites to whet your appetite for this topic...

http://thenewspaper.org.uk/ Click on this link to explore the website based on a newspaper. This is also very similar to another site http://www.firstnews.co.uk/ which we have used before. Try comparing it with some of the tabloid and broad sheet newspaper which you might find in the local newsagents, Which type of paper gives you the best range of news? Any articles which you can bring into school for our ‘Newsstand’ will be gratefully appreciated!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/ Newsround’s site

http://www.channel4.com/apps26/learning/microsites/E/essentials/geography/units/news_bi.shtml Try printing off some of the worksheets to do at home from this Channel 4 website.
When you have found all of these items of news, a great challenge is to locate all the places on a map of the UK. You could even try to locate them on a map of the world! Could you give the co-ordinates to your friends and ask them to locate the place? Maybe they could then match the story up with the map references!

http://maps.google.co.uk/ Can you find our school using the Google Maps site? For some real aerial photos, why not try Google Earth! You will have to ask your parents if you can download the program onto your machine, but the results are fantastic! Warrington is still a bit hazy, but if you have a look around London, the detail is remarkable! Go on – I was on it for an hour without realising!

http://www.googleearthcoolplaces.com/ This mini-site, has gathered all of the ‘cool-places’ that can be seen using Google Earth. Some of the aerial photos are amazing. Do you know how they get all of the photographs up to date so quickly?

Mr Barker and myself will be there to lead the discussion and to answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend, please inform any member of the Year 5/6 team.
